Some of Sydney's biggest names remain on the comeback trail from injuries and are unlikely to play big parts in the JLT Community Series, with Dan Hannebery "furthest behind" due to a calf setback.
Superstar Lance Franklin, captain Josh Kennedy, veteran defender Heath Grundy and young gun Isaac Heeney have been on modified programs over pre-season and the Swans are taking a cautious approach to their rehabilitation.
But head of football Tom Harley expects they will be fit for the season-opener against West Coast at Optus Stadium.
Harley said Hannebery had recovered from sore groins and hips after he "soldiered on pretty bravely" last year, but the star midfielder has suffered a fresh calf issue.
"(He) got himself to a point where his running was intense again (but) he's had a minor setback with a calf," Harley told sydneyswans.com.au.
"Of all of our players Dan's probably the furthest behind. We're obviously hopeful he's ready to go at the back end of the JLT … but time will tell with that."
Franklin underwent surgery on both knees and an ankle in the off-season and might not be seen until round one.
"He had a good block pre-Christmas, which was basically the recovery from the surgery and starting to build up the strength in his legs – on his knees and ankles in particular," Harley said.
"He's returned post-Christmas in really good shape, which is important, and is starting to ramp up his training.
"He's joining in the main skills session at the moment and he's in good condition.
"I think we'll manage expectations of when he actually plays with regards to AFLX and the JLT but certainly we envisage Lance being in good condition for the start of the season."
Heeney underwent minor knee surgery in December but is aiming to appear in the pre-season series.
The Swans face the Lions on March 3 before taking on crosstown rivals Greater Western Sydney six days later.
"Again, like Lance, we're not expecting any hiccups and he'll (Heeney) be right to go at the start of the season," Harley said.
Kennedy also had a minor knee arthroscope but is in no doubt for the Eagles clash on March 25.
"We know with Josh he's an absolute professional and physically in good shape, it's just about getting miles into his legs," Harley said.
Meanwhile, Grundy, whose sore foot deteriorated late last season, should also be on the flight west.
"Not expecting (him to have) a delayed start to the season, but along with Dan Hannebery probably towards the back end of pre-season in readiness for round one," Harley said.
