Sydney Swans defender Callum Mills has undergone a successful operation to repair a broken bone in his foot.
The 20-year-old suffered the injury in the lead up to last Saturday’s match against Brisbane in a mishap while walking back to the SCG from a nearby café.
Mills suffered a clean break to his fifth metatarsal on the outside of his foot, which was repaired during Monday’s surgery.
Head of Football Tom Harley said all had gone to plan during the operation.
“That will take him out for the season,” Harley confirmed.
“The surgeon said the surgery went well and Callum is recovering at the moment.
“He is obviously a Sydney boy, so he is with family, and then we would expect to see him around the club in the next few days.”
Young defender Lewis Melican has suffered another setback as he looks to return to the senior side, injuring his hamstring in the final stages of his rehabilitation.
Melican was nearing a return to the side but suffered a strain to his other hamstring on the cusp of returning to full fitness.
“He will miss the next couple of weeks, which probably takes us up to the bye, which is disappointing for Lewis,” Harley said.
“He was absolutely nearing a return but unfortunately it won’t be in the next couple of weeks.”
Alex Johnson will make a long-awaited return to the NEAFL side against Sydney Uni at the SCG on Friday afternoon.
Johnson has recovered from a groin injury that has kept him sidelined since early in the season.
Key forward Sam Reid is set to return to the main training group in the next week as he continues his recovery from a quad tendon injury.
Harley expects Reid to be back playing following the mid-season bye.
“A follow up scan was had last week and the tendon looks very thick and healthy, which is fantastic,” Harley said.
“He (Reid) will ramp up his speed running with the view to integrate into training in the next week.
“His return is looking likely to be after the bye, which would be a conservative approach and with a player like Sam we would take that approach.”
