Sydney Swans debutant Ryley Stoddart has tipped his hat to his teammates after an 18-point win over the Brisbane Lions on Saturday.

The 18-year-old faced inclement conditions and a physical affair in his first AFL game, but said he felt right at home as the Swans claimed a win at the Gabba.

“If I was ever unsure where I was the boys let me know straight away or if I wasn’t doing the right thing they were quick to get on me, which is perfect,” Stoddart said.

“And they trust me – if I tell them I’ll do something they’ll back me.

“The support is huge. You do good and something you think is just little but they’re right over and giving you a pat on the head and it gives you confidence.”

The Eastern Ranges product received his biggest pat on the head when he booted his first AFL goal at the 17-minute mark of the third term.

Isaac Heeney had sent the Sherrin soaring inside 50 to a one-on-one contest between Lance Franklin and Darcy Gardiner.

The ball spilled over the back and Stoddart swooped, pirouetting at the goal face and slotting the six-pointer off his natural left foot.

Every Swan on ground flocked to him like bugs to light as the newcomer soaked up a moment to savour.

Ben Ronke was in the middle of the mayhem on debut in Round 6 and Tom McCartin against Fremantle just last week.

Stoddart said his first goal made for an “unbelievable feeling”.

“I was lucky enough to get on the end of one,” Stoddart said.

“I probably should have handballed it but luckily it went through.

“It was one of the best feelings I’ve had in my life.”

The Swans have now won three games in a row and, as the ladder stands on Saturday night, have picked the lock on the top four for the first time this season.

Sydney is now set for a clash with Carlton in Marn Grook at the SCG next Friday night.
