JED LAMB might have been the first of the Sydney Swans' picks on draft night but coach John Longmire believes the club may have found one of the toughest players of this year's talent pool.

With co-captain Brett Kirk having retired and Jude Bolton entering the twilight of his career, a hard-at-it midfielder was high on the list of Swans recruiters.

So Dandenong Stingrays onballer Luke Parker was just what the Swans ordered. And at pick No.40, in years to come he may just be viewed as the steal of the 2010 national draft.

"He's a player that we think is just super hard," Longmire said from the Gold Coast.

"He's very good at winning contested ball and he's a 15-beep, so he can run.

"He was a quality midfielder as a junior and we're really confident that he can be a good player coming through our senior system."

Parker was the Swans' second selection of what the coach believed was a successful night at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

"Clubs rate different players differently, so obviously there's some players that push in before the players that we took that we didn't have as high as other clubs and conversely is the case as well.

"That always means that, even in your last pick, I don't think I've been to too many drafts when there's not a player there that you really wouldn't want to take.

"So I think in the end there's always the talent there and you've just got to make sure you do your work. Our recruiters have done a power of work and have been following these players for a long time."

Longmire said Lamb (pick 21), known for his craftiness and nous near goal after having 70 shots at the sticks in the TAC Cup this year, had the ability to win his own ball and could be pushed into the midfield in the future.

The Swans chose Alex Johnson with pick 57 and hope he too can add versatility to their developing young list.

"He's a tall at 194cm and he can play at either end," Longmire said.

"He's quick and a leader as well. We think he's got some real attributes to come through with our next generation of taller players."

Former Eagle Matt Spangher and upgraded rookie Mike Pyke topped off the Swans' night.

"We're really confident of all of our picks that we got tonight," Longmire said.
