Sydney Swans coach John Longmire is looking no further ahead than this weekend’s Sydney Derby XIII against GWS, as his team looks to make it six wins in a row.
After a shaky start to season 2017, the Swans have won eight of their last nine matches to be sitting in eighth position on the ladder.
A formidable opponent awaits this weekend with the Giants, who are coming off consecutive draws, currently sitting second on the ladder.
Longmire said his side is aware of what to expect when they take to Spotless Stadium on Saturday night.
“You don’t look too far ahead in this competition because it is really tough,” Longmire said.
“You are living quarter to quarter at the moment because you see the momentum swings in games is so extreme at different times.
“We play here on the weekend against one of the best teams in the competition, so that is as far as we look.
“We need to get our preparation right this week to make sure we are competitive against this team, because they are such a good quality unit.”
The Swans have a tough run home with trips to Geelong to take on the Cats and to Adelaide Oval to face the Crows.
While the Swans senior coach is pleased with his side’s current form, he understands the importance of remaining focussed.
“We have been in pretty solid form over the last few months but we need to keep that up,” Longmire said.
“We play a team this week that is second on the ladder and has won eleven games – and it’s not going to be easy.
“It’s a massive game and we look forward to that challenge.”
The Swans will be looking to rectify a poor recent record against the Giants on Saturday night having lost their last three matches against their cross-town rivals.
Longmire believes the rivalry between the two sides is as genuine as ever after some close contests in recent times.
“There is nothing false about two quality teams competing against each other, it’s just the reality of it,” he said.
“The good thing has been that it is built on two teams that are now in pretty good form.
“It develops and there are always layers added to it. That’s the real benefit of having teams that are pretty competitive, and you get that naturally.”
Captain Josh Kennedy (quad) is expected to be fit to play after being a late withdrawal ahead of last weekend’s win over the Gold Coast Suns.
