Swans and Dane are feeling the pain

A MORNING run has ended in tears for Dane Rampe, with the All-Australian defender breaking his arm in a freak training mishap.

Rampe, 26, tripped over a chain and landed awkwardly on his arm while recovering with teammates outside the SCG. Scans later revealed a small crack below his elbow.

The injury to the All-Australian defender is a major blow for the Swans, who not only lost their first round match to Port Adelaide at the SCG, but are managing a plethora of injuries.

Emerging defender Aliir Aliir was held back from the Swans’ season opener and shapes as Rampe’s likely replacement, despite a limited preseason.

Coach John Longmire indicated Rampe would miss a significant chunk of the season.

“Rampe went for a run this morning and jumped over a chain on the run, landed on his arm and broke it,” Longmire said.

“At the moment it looks like a five-week injury.

“I couldn’t believe it to be honest, to fall on it trying to jump the chain then falling on the concrete 20 metres from the front door.

“He has a crack just below his elbow and at this stage I have been told it is a minimum of five weeks.

“I went through the game with him an hour beforehand and so obviously it is very disappointing.”

Sydney will be without Dane Rampe for at least a month after the star defender tripped over and broke his arm while going on a run around the SCG precinct.

Rampe was in the middle of a planned rehabilitation run after the round one loss to Port Adelaide when he tripped over a chain and landed on his arm, breaking it.

Coach John Longmire confirmed the circumstances of the injury when addressing the media on Monday.

"Rampe went for a run this morning and jumped over a chain on the run, landed on his arm and broke it."

The All-Australian defender has been a constant in the Swans back six since making his debut in 2013.

The club was in the middle of preparations to fly relatives to Melbourne for Friday night's clash with the Western Bulldogs; which would have been Rampe's 100th game.

"I couldn't believe it to be honest, to fall on it trying to jump the chain then falling on the concrete 20 metres from the front door," Longmire said.

Sydney yesterday suffered another significant blow ahead of Friday night’s grand final rematch against the Western Bulldogs, when defender Dean Rampe broke an arm on a training run.

With the Swans already bruised after an opening-round defeat to Port Adelaide at the SCG, the loss of the star defender places further stress on a defence that was found wanting by the Power last Saturday.

Sydney were not the only club to receive disappointing news yesterday, with scans revealing Kangaroos spearhead Jarrad Waite will require surgery on an injured shoulder. But there was more positive news for St Kilda superstar Nick Riewoldt, with the club yesterday declaring Riewoldt may miss only a fortnight to recover from the knee injury that forced him from the ground on a stretcher on Saturday.
