As the 2019 Telstra AFL Trade period continues sydneyswans.com.au reflects ten years on about the 2009 AFL Trade Period.
It would be a trade period that would set up the Sydney Swans next premiership with three players acquired during that period going on to win the 2012 premiership with the Club.
Josh Kennedy, Shane Mumford, Lewis Jetta, Ben McGlynn and Mark Seaby all joined the Swans as part of the 2009 trade period.
Shane Mumford joined the Swans from the Cats in exchange for selection 28, Mumford went on to play 79 matches for the Swans including the 2012 premiership.
However it was the move of Josh Kennedy from Hawthorn that may go down as one of the most instrumental of that period.
Kennedy’s father (John Jnr) and grandfather (John Snr) were both legends in the history of the Hawthorn Football Club but it was Josh who would make the decision to join the Swans in search of further opportunities.
The Swans traded draft selection 39 to the Hawks in exchange for Kennedy who has gone on to play 233 games for the Swans including the 2012 premiership, three Bob Skilton Medal’s and three All Australian awards.
Kennedy has also been captain of the Swans since the 2017 season.
Ben McGlynn joined the Swans in exchange for draft selection 46 and draft selection 70 to the Hawks.
McGlynn played 127 games for the Hawks but missed the 2012 premiership after injuring his hamstring in week one of the 2012 finals series.
Mark Seaby was traded by the West Coast Eagles in that trade period for draft selection 22, but he would go on to only play 18 games for the Swans due to ongoing injury concerns.
It would be the trading out of Darren Jolly that would present the pathway for Lewis Jetta to join the Club.
The Swans got draft selection 14 and draft selection 46 from Collingwood in exchange for Jolly and would take 14 to the draft where they selected the youngster from Western Australia.
Jetta would go on to play 127 games for the Swans, including the 2012 premiership, in a season which he booted 45 goals as a small forward.
What can the Swans do in the 2019 trade period? Only time will tell.
