Senior coach John Longmire believes Brandon Jack, Dean Towers and Dan Robinson are among those inching closer to earning a rock-solid spot within the Swans’ senior team.
The Swans lost over 700 games of experience when premiership players Adam Goodes, Rhyce Shaw and Mike Pyke retired at the end of last season, while another 264 games departed in the wake of Craig Bird and Lewis Jetta’s trade during the exchange period.
The exodus has, however, left the door wide open for a number of players to seize an opportunity including Jack and Towers who proved their importance towards the latter end of the year and during the finals series.
Those two, plus and injury-free Robinson, are expected to push for a regular senior spot.
“They have been on the cusp for 12 months to two years now and have put a lot of work into their off-seasons,” Longmire said.
“And you can really see that coming to the fore now. They’re training with a high intensity, they’re getting involved in every training drill, they’re putting sessions on sessions and are getting better every week.
“They’re also driving each other knowing there’s an opportunities to be taken.”
Jack, entering his fourth AFL season, managed 10 games last year playing as a pressure forward and provided a spark towards the business end of the season.
Towers enjoyed arguably his best performance of 17-game career in last year’s qualifying final against Fremantle, kicking two important goals as centre-half forward when Sam Reid went down with a hamstring injury.
Robinson, starved of opportunities last season due to injury, showed his ball-winning abilities in his four senior games and is expected to push for selection when the season arrives.
The Swans play Port Adelaide in Blacktown on February 20 for the opening round of the 2016 NAB Challenge.
