Kieren Jack has declared the Sydney Swans will continue the fight against racism and rally for tolerance, all in the name of retired champion Adam Goodes.
Jack delivered a passionate speech in front of teammates, Swans staff and supporters during Tuesday night’s Guernsey Presentation and Hall of Fame Dinner at The Star Events Centre.
The crowd was in awe as the co-captain vowed the Swans will continue to stand up for positive change in society.
“Last year, it was our Club that stood up and said enough is enough,” Jack said.
“It was the red and white that spoke out against racism and ignorance to lead a national campaign. Our mate’s battle became our battle.
“Why? Because we know that our Club is better than that. That our code is better than that. That we as Australians are better than that.
“I am proud to say, that despite Adam Goodes no longer being a part of our playing group, we will continue to fight intolerance. We will continue to educate our players and our staff in the hope of creating positive change in our society.”
Swans fans rallied behind Goodes in his absence during the Round 18 clash with Adelaide at the SCG last year, in what Jack described as a “powerful moment”.
He recalled standing in the middle of the ground both stunned and moved by the atmosphere generated by the 38,690 fans who stood and showed their support for the No. 37.
“The cheers in the 7th minute of the 3rd quarter last year against Adelaide revealed to me just how powerful the Sydney Swans army can be and reinforces the impact we can have if we stand together,” he continued.
“I am convinced our fans are like no others in their passion and dedication.”
Jack also welcomed the recent introduction of the Rainbow Swans supporter group, saying it’s an example of how the Club is leading the way in celebrating diversity among its fans.
