Sydney Swans midfielder Tom Mitchell feels fortunate to be around some of the best midfielders in the competition, and studying them has been the essential key to his development and consistency.

Mitchell was, for the first time in his career, picked in the Swans’ Round 1 side that demolished Collingwood at the SCG.

Last year’s most improved player opened his 2016 account with a performance that included 30 possessions, nine tackles and a career-best three goals.

It was a continuation of his 2015 form in which he averaged 27 disposals and played 19 of the last 20 games, missing only one match due to an eye injury.

His effort on the weekend would often earn a best on ground nod, but other Swans also shined including Luke Parker (40) and Kieren Jack (35).

It’s those same guys, as well as knowledge and advice passed on from Josh Kennedy, Dan Hannebery and Jarrad McVeigh, which has Mitchell beaming with gratitude.

“It’s obviously great to have (Parker and Jack) back, we really missed them in the finals last year and probably got exposed a little bit,” Mitchell said.

“To have two of our leaders and two of our best players is definitely beneficial.

“I’m in a very fortunate position. I’ve got some of the best midfielders in the comp to train and play alongside.

“They’ve really helped so I’m really appreciative of the help they can give me.”

Despite reaching a high level on continuity and consistency, Mitchell highlighted that there was room for improvement to reach the level of his star teammates, including his running capacity, his kicking efficiency and ability to help shoulder the load.

“They’re the guys that get attention, so while it’s nice to learn off them, I’d like to help them out more when I can,” he added.

“It was great to have a full pre-season, just to work on my overall game.

“My running ability has improved, just through more training, and I always want to keep working on my skills.

“I think it’s just a natural progression of my game and hopefully I can continue that this year.”

Mitchell has been retained as part of an extended squad which will be whittled down to a final 22 for Sunday’s clash with Carlton at Etihad Stadium.
