Stadium Stomp is back again in 2016 with the ultimate stair climbing challenge set to take place at the SCG on Sunday 17 July.
Stadium Stomp SCG covers some 6,300 stairs up and down the SCG and Allianz Stadium grandstands in a course unmatched by anything Sydney has seen before. It’s the largest and only event of its kind in the state.
For participants it provides a unique fitness challenge which event organiser, Ben King from King Performance, stresses is not a race but a test of stamina and concentration that’s open to all fitness levels.
“We’re a non-competitive event, we don’t time our participants and encourage all fitness levels to have a go. After all, there are plenty of seats to choose from if you get a little tired,” said Ben King.
How it works
Participants will climb up, down and around the bays of the SCG on a course set to music that is expected to take anywhere from 40-70 minutes to complete depending on fitness levels.
The course will start within the Members Pavilion of the SCG heading in an anticlockwise direction. Participants stomp their way through several stands before heading across to Allianz Stadium.
Once there, they'll stair climb their way around the entire lower deck of the stadium before returning to the SCG (via the access tunnel) to complete the remaining SCG stands, finishing with a full lap of the SCG oval to finish.
Staggered start or wave times begin from 8am to 11am to ensure the stairs don’t become congested.
Anyone 12 years and older can enter as a team or individual and participants can choose their preferred wave time when registering.
Spectators can view the event free of charge via the designated spectator viewing area accessible via Gate A. In this way family and friends can watch and support the participants as they stomp around the SCG grandstands.
Why do it?
There aren’t many people in Sydney who haven’t been to the SCG to watch a game and cheered from the stands. Now everyone can experience the SCG in a unique way and become an active participant rather than the traditional spectator.
If you need a fitness reason, stair climbing is an excellent way to build cardiorespiratory endurance and lower-body muscular endurance and strength.
Climbing a flight of stairs (ten steps) is the equivalent calorie burn of taking 38 steps on level ground, so it’s almost four times as beneficial to take the stairs.
