Premiership players Adam Goodes, Rhyce Shaw, Nick Malceski and Shane Mumford will all take the field for the first time this year in Saturday night’s round three NAB Cup clash with the Gold Coast Suns at Blacktown International Sportspark.

Kieren Jack and Craig Bird will also return to the side, along with co-captain Jarrad McVeigh and Norm Smith medallist Ryan O’Keefe.

Sydney Swans assistant coach Stuart Dew said the side will benefit from an injection of senior experience this weekend.

“A fair bit of senior experience is coming back into the team this week, so we’re looking forward to starting to try and settle the side for round one,” he told sydneyswans.com.au.

“I think each week prior to this we’ve had 10 or 11 senior players out of the team each week, so to be able to really nail our side down ahead of round one is really important.”

Keeping their place in the Swans squad this week are Dean Towers and rookie Dane Rampe, who played in the team’s previous two NAB Cup clashes.

Dew said both players have earned the right to line up in the red and white again this weekend following impressive showings in rounds one and two.

“Both players have been showing really good signs,” he said.

“Dane (Rampe) has come from the Sydney footy league, and he’s a mature-aged draftee and it’s the same with Dean Towers - they are a little bit older and a little bit more experienced.

“They’ve both shown that their bodies can handle the workload a little bit more and they’ve been given another chance this week.

“The good part about the NAB Cup is that some players get opportunities and there is always one or two that bob up and get a chance and hopefully those two can put a bit of pressure on the guys who have been in the senior team in the past.”

Following three consecutive NAB Cup losses, Dew said it was important that the Swans bring their best to Saturday night’s clash, adding this match was of particular importance given the Swans will face off against the Suns again in round two of the home and away season.

“It’s going to be good. The Suns have obviously improved on last year and it’s their third year now,” Dew said.

“We’re looking to improve on our own preparation and certainly their team will look different round two and so will ours, but we’ll certainly take a little bit out of the game.

“At the end of the day, you always want to win whether it’s the NAB Cup or the Grand Final, we always want to win and that will go a long way in our preparations for the season.”
