The Sydney Swans will not be taking Saturday afternoon’s clash against the bottom placed Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium lightly.
Despite having just one win on the board this season the Suns are a list jam packed with young talent after being cruelled by injuries.
Ruckman Mike Pyke is confident his side will be able to maintain their intensity against the Suns on the weekend.
“Every week in AFL football is very difficult in both a physical and a mental sense,” Pyke said.
“If you take your foot off the gas clubs can scare you and Gold Coast is no different.
“We are under no illusions as to the talent they have on their list, whilst they are not playing particularly well as a team they could beat you one on one at any time.
“We are going into the game and treating them as a very good club.”
Swans coach John Longmire echoed the sentiments of Pyke earlier this week when speaking about the talent on the Suns list.
“They have had a fair run with injuries and that can affect any team. That certainly has had an effect on the Gold Coast’s win loss ratio to this point,” Longmire said.
“We saw them play their first half on the weekend and they were pretty competitive against a team we know is terrific in the Hawks.
“They were pretty good particularly in that first half, their pressure around the ball was good and we will look at that first half to see what they did well and try and combat that.
“We don’t take any side lightly and certainly won’t be against the Gold Coast Suns this week.”
The Swans are yet to lose to Gold Coast in the four meetings between the sides since the inception of the expansion side.
