Catherine Cox believed calling time on her distinguished netballing career would mean more time getting to the SCG to watch her beloved Swans.
But as the veteran goal-shooter discovered, life after netball hasn’t been so relaxing with commentary commitments, coaching clinics and a new stage show production called “The Centurions” soaking up a lot of valuable time.
“I thought it would be a nice, easy retirement but that hasn’t seemed to happen. Not yet anyway,” Cox told SwansTV.
“It’s funny how you have visions on what you’re going to do you finish the game. Mine was to walk away and try something else but it has sucked me back in again.
“It’s probably a good thing, I love it.”
And, thankfully, she loves the club and vowed to fit the odd Swans game in between the busy schedule.
Looking around at the many memorabilia pieces inside her north Sydney apartment, you quickly understand how difficult walking away from the game completely would be.
The game played a massive part in Cox’s life having amassed 108 international caps over a 16-year playing career – captaining Australia nine times during that period – on top of winning two world championships (2007 and 2011) and Commonwealth Games gold (2002).
Netball also played a massive part in igniting her passion for the Swans when the club joined the NSW Swifts as a supporting partner in 2008.
“David Missen (former head of conditioning) was the trainer for the Swifts, back when I was playing for them, and also a trainer for the Swans,” Cox said.
“He got an association going and we started using the facilities. We just had that really good bond between netball and football which doesn’t often happen in NSW.
“It’s something we’ve held on to and supported ever since.”
