Sydney Swans AFL fans are on a winner with a new public transport ticketing deal for the 2020 premiership season.
Sydney Swans memberships and tickets to Swans games at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Moore Park will include return travel on trains, metro, buses, ferries and Sydney’s new light rail services.
The new travel entitlements will be in place for Sydney Swans’ first home game of the 2020 season, a clash with Essendon on Friday 27 March, and continue for the remainder of the season.
Transport for NSW Coordinator-General Marg Prendergast said with regular trams running between Circular Quay and Randwick from this month and public transport covered by the cost of match tickets to games at the SCG, Swans fans were double winners.
“Partnering with the Sydney Swans to secure this ticketing arrangement is a real coup for NSW Transport, the sporting club and Swans supporters,” Ms Prendergast said.
“The new turn-up-and-go light rail will transform the city and facilitate the movement of people, particularly event crowds, to and from the city and South East.
“There has never been an easier and more reliable way for Swans fans to travel to home clashes by public transport - trams will drop off event-goers on the doorstep of the SCG at the new Moore Park light rail stop.
“About one third of AFL fans travel from Sydney’s northern suburbs and another third hail from the south, so we’ll be directly benefitting these customers with light rail connections to the SCG on top of other transport options.”
The ticketing announcement coincides with Transport for NSW extending its road safety partnership with the Sydney Swans for another season.
Sydney Swans CEO Tom Harley said the transport initiative is a terrific outcome for members and supporters.
“We’re thrilled to not only be extending our partnership with Transport for NSW but to also be making it easier and more affordable for Swans fans to get to games,” Mr Harley said.
“Our members and supporters have told us that the inclusion of public transport in ticketing is important to them, so we’re pleased to deliver by including return public transport to the SCG in Sydney Swans memberships and tickets.
“We’ve worked with Transport for NSW for a number of years to promote the ‘Get Your Hand Off It’ mobile phone distraction campaign in support of road safety, and this evolution of our partnership is a great outcome for fans, the precinct and the environment.
“With the new light rail soon to commence, it will be easier than ever to get to the SCG and we’re looking forward to welcoming Sydney Swans fans to plenty of big matches in season 2020.”
Light rail will run regular services between Circular Quay and Randwick as well as additional, frequent express shuttle services between Central and Moore Park for major games during the season. Extra services will run to get everyone home afterwards as well.
Fans choosing to walk between Central and Moore Park via Devonshire Street and the Albert ‘Tibby’ Cotter Walkway will also be able to make use of the new Anzac Parade Pedestrian Bridge, which is soon to open, allowing for an easier and safer crossing over Anzac Parade.
