Sydney Swans defender Lewis Roberts-Thomson is expected to miss the next three matches after scans confirmed he suffered a fractured cheekbone during Saturday’s victory over Fremantle at the SCG.
Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron confirmed the 28-year-old would undergo surgery tomorrow.
“Lewis will have surgery on Tuesday after he sustained some accidental contact to the right side of his face during Saturday’s match,” Cameron said.
“He will have a plate a inserted to help stabilise the fracture and we expect him to miss three matches."
Saturday’s match against Fremantle was Roberts-Thomson’s 150th for the Swans.
Despite sustaining the fracture, Roberts-Thomson was able to play on and play a pivotal role in the Swans win.
Late in third term he produced a superb chase and tackle on Adam McPhee, which resulted in a Swans goal.
Speaking after the game, coach John Longmire was full praise for Roberts-Thomson’s performance.
"Lewie had a couple of pretty significant moments to be honest," Longmire said.
"The tackle was outstanding and it's such an important part of the game.
"They had momentum. We talk about goals and things in footy, but that was a really strong tackle."
The Swans next three opponents are Port Adelaide (AAMI Stadium), North Melbourne (SCG) and Hawthorn (Launceston).
