Aged care resident Barry was a special guest at the Club’s recent Round 20 win over Port Adelaide at the SCG.
As a guest of the club he feasted on pastries and other treats in the members’ box and even had the opportunity to meet star ruckman Kurt Tippett.
Currently a resident at Sambell Lodge in Clifton Hill Barry was hosted in Sydney for the weekend by Paul Brophy, Manager of Sambell Lodge.
Throughout his life Barry has lived in various temporary housing facilities and on the streets.
“I know what it’s like to be homeless. Living in deserted houses and under cardboard boxes,” he said.
Although there have been some hard times, Barry also has had some fond memories and wanted to visit some of his old haunts and reminisce about his days in Kings Cross during the 1970s.
In his visit to the SCG Barry decided to adopt the Swans as his team for the day.
“It made me feel really special,” Barry said.
The Brotherhood of St Laurence regards care as a tool for living. Many of the older people who live at the aged care residences and are involved in programs have experienced a lifetime of disadvantage.
The Bortherhood strives to make sure they are involved with the community and enjoy security, comfort and choice in life.
