Sydney forward Sam Reid is hopeful he’ll be in the mix to play when footy returns, after recovering from minor knee surgery.

The 28-year old began running last week and is expected to re-join some skills when training resumes.

It follows an arthroscope in late March.

GM of Football Charlie Gardiner says Reid is progressing well in his recovery.

“Sam was off legs for about four weeks, but he has progressed well over the past couple of weeks and he ran well today,” Gardiner said.

“We expect him to be able to do some skills training probably at the start of next week.

“Depending on when the restart (of the season) kicks off we are hopeful that he will be close to available, but it will depend on the timelines and how quickly things ramp up from here.”

Lance Franklin (knee) and Lewis Melican (hamstring) have both spent the AFL shutdown period recovering from their respective injuries and both have returned to training.

Ben Ronke suffered a hyperextension of his knee in the Round 1 win over Adelaide and is looking to increase his load with some running in the next fortnight.

“We have unloaded Ben and he had an extended period of no running, but will run in the next two weeks we hope,” Gardiner said.

“His availability will be determined by the restart timelines and just how quickly we are asked to get going.”

Young ruckman Joel Amartey is still some time from a return after suffering a hamstring injury shortly after the industry stoppage.

“Joel sustained the hamstring injury shortly after the shutdown whilst training by himself and it was a reoccurrence of a hamstring injury he has suffered previously,” Gardiner said.

“We have had to take a fairly cautious approach with him.

“He is back running and starting to do some training but he is probably at least four to six weeks away from a return to play.”
