Following a career-high four-goal performance in the Sydney Swans’ 35-point win over the Gold Coast Suns, Harry Cunningham said he hoped to continue to develop as a versatile player.
The 20-year-old, who has been tasked with a range of roles this season including a lock-down role on Essendon’s Brent Stanton in round nine as well as wearing the substitute vest last week against the Cats, finished Sunday’s match as the leading goal scorer and was named in the best for the Swans.
Speaking to SwansTV at Metricon Stadium, Cunningham said he was pleased to be able to show he had more strings to his bow in Sunday’s win.
“It was good to get on the board and have a bit of an impact on the game,” he said.
“That was the focus going in just to have a bit of an impact on the game and it was mainly pressure wise, and I sort of got myself in the game with a few tackles and the goals come from that.
“I see myself as an adaptable player and able to play a few different roles and I suppose to come out today after being the sub last week, the focus was just to work hard and run and to get on the end of a few and I was lucky enough to do that today.”
Cunningham was not the only young Swan who stepped up and made an impact in Sunday’s win, with Sam Reid also contributing a season-high three goals in a short burst during the third term.
With key forward Lance Franklin also finished the game with three goals, Cunningham said it was exciting to have so many players contributing to the win this week.
“There’s a bit more pressure on the opposition when you’ve got the likes of Goodesy, ‘Tippo’ and obviously ‘Buddy’ and Sam Reid popping up kicking goals,” he said.
“It’s going to take a good defence to stop it when we’re on, and we came away with the win, which was pleasing and all of those blokes had an impact today.”
Sunday’s game also marked a milestone for a man at the opposite end of the field, with defender Heath Grundy celebrating his 150th game with a win.
Speaking after the match, Grundy said it was a good feeling to cap off his milestone game with a positive result.
“The boys played well,” he said.
“We’ve got some things we can improve on but it was nice to have a win on a milestone game.”
Grundy, who shared the role of playing the Suns’ young talls throughout Sunday’s match, said it was pleasing to come away with a strong win over a determined Gold Coast outfit.
“Every game is pretty solid, but (the Suns) have been in great form,” he said.
“They had as many wins as us, so they’re going pretty well.
“We knew their starts and their first quarters had been really good this year, so we had to come out and start well and put some pressure on.
“They kept going and going and they played a four-quarter effort, but to our credit we just kept working and working and we got there in the end.”
The Swans will now turn their attention to this Saturday’s blockbuster clash at the SCG against Port Adelaide, who sit two games clear atop the AFL ladder.
