Rams outclassed by Stingrays
The NSW/ACT Rams fell short against Dandenong, as attention shifts to Saturday's match in Albury
In wet and windy conditions, the Rams’ endeavour was high throughout the match, but the team was unable to match the efficiency of the more seasoned Stingrays’ side.
The game started at a high intensity, with both teams providing a fierce contest. Dandenong’s delivery in the first term was impressive, with the home side hitting targets and kicking truly, which gave them a ten-point lead at the first change.
The Rams hit back in the second term, led by the run and carry of QBE Sydney Swans Academy players Jack Hiscox, and the delivery of Isaac Heeney and Jordan Foote.
Despite managing to outscore their opposition four goals to three in the second term, skill errors cost the Rams, as they trailed the Stingrays by four points at half-time.
The conditions worsened after the main break, with the rain becoming a major obstacle. Dandenong responded best to the conditions and kicked three long goals in succession through overlap and outside run.
Heeney was again a standout for the Rams in the third quarter while Brad Watson also had a busy quarter with his ability to read the game and use the ball effectively.
Heavy rain in the final term saw the game become a scrap, with both teams doing what they could to push the ball forward at every opportunity. After a disappointing third term, the Rams rallied but couldn’t put the score on the board, while Dandenong were able to make the most of their scoring opportunities and ran away with a 29-point win.
Heeney finished as the best player for the Rams with 33 disposals, 10 tackles, 10 clearances, seven inside 50s and two score assists.
The Rams will now turn their attention to this Saturday afternoon’s clash with the Murray Bushrangers at Lavington Sports Ground in Albury.
Against the Bushrangers, the Rams will look to make the most of their scoring opportunities and use the ball more efficiently for four quarters. They also need to strike a more even balance between their ability to win the football in the contest and in open space.
