Jack's focus to take Hawks down
Kieren Jack says the Swans sole focus this week is securing a win over third-placed Hawthorn at the MCG
After enjoying a week off over the bye round, the Swans would bring up a 13th consecutive win should they be victorious this Saturday night at the MCG, a feat that has never been achieved in club history.
Speaking to media ahead of training on Tuesday afternoon, Jack said the Swans had their sights set on the challenge ahead and were not buying into any of the hype surrounding the club’s winning record.
“Records are made to be broken, but that’s all I really buy into it,” Jack told reporters.
“It’s been a good run but we need to continue.
“The way we focus week in, week out is like that and we don’t focus on winning streaks or anything like that, it’s just a week-to-week process.
“We just want to win.”
The Swans face one of their toughest opponents this season when they travel south to tackle an in-form Hawthorn side at the MCG on Saturday night.
The Hawks, who posted an impressive win over the Adelaide Crows before the bye, are also likely to be bolstered by the return of premiership defender Josh Gibson and talented youngster Bradley Hill.
With such a big task ahead, Jack said his side couldn’t afford to be focused on anything other than the challenge of Hawthorn.
“It’s another game and it’s a test,” he said.
“It’s another game that we can challenge ourselves against one of the best and see where we’re at and how our structures stand up against probably one of the best teams in the last couple of years.
“That’s all it is and that’s how I see it.”
The Swans could also re-gain some important players of their own for Saturday night’s clash with Kurt Tippett, Rhyce Shaw and Dan Hannebery all set to face tests this week.
The trio all took the field at training on Tuesday afternoon, completing a light skills sessions and individual running programs.
Jack said Tippett, who was a late withdrawal from the Swans’ round 16 clash with West Coast with knee inflammation, would be a huge inclusion for the club if fit.
“We want to make sure if he comes in that he’s going to be right, so I daresay that today he’ll be put through his paces and if he gets through that, he will (be put through his paces) on Thursday as well and then we’ll make a decision,” he said.
“Fingers crossed, because we’d love him out there because he is such a key, but there is no point in rushing him back.”
One player who will be out on the MCG this weekend is Lance Franklin, who is set to face his former side in Melbourne for the first time.
Jack said he was pleased Franklin was now in Swans’ colours, and said ‘Buddy’ was not daunted by the occasion of facing his former team mates.
“It’s nice he’s wearing red and white and not brown and gold,” he said.
“He’s been great and he’s looking forward to it.
“It’s his first game against the Hawks down there (in Melbourne), which I’m sure he’s not going to be daunted at all by the task, because he loves those sort of occasions.”
