A scintillating 71-point win over Carlton in round 17 at the SCG carried the Sydney Swans to a record-equalling twelfth consecutive win, a feat that had not been achieved by the club since 1935.

Following a fairly tight opening half, a stellar third term set up the Swans’ thirteenth win of the season, with the side piling on 10.4 to 0.1 to break open a 70-point lead.

Lance Franklin was superb in the third term, booting five of the Swans’ ten goals, to finish the match with six, his biggest goal haul for the season to date.

Josh Kennedy was again at his brilliant best, picking up a career-high 41 touches, as well as a record-breaking 29 contested possessions, in the win over the Blues, while co-captain Jarrad McVeigh was also impressive through the midfield.

Young forward Sam Reid also chimed in with four goals against the Blues, which was also his biggest goal haul for the year.

Following the win, Swans coach John Longmire said he was thrilled with how his side was able to pick up the intensity in the third quarter.

"There were a couple of things structurally we changed, but I think it was just about keeping the persistence up and keeping the intensity up and eventually things start going your way," he said.

"It was a fantastic third quarter, there's no doubt about that.

"We keep on persisting and it broke our way. Once you get on a roll like that, you have to make the most of it and we certainly did in that third quarter."
