The Sydney Swans’ attack will receive a boost, with Kurt Tippett and Ben McGlynn returning for Saturday night’s Sydney Derby against GWS at the SCG.

The pair, who both suffered injuries in the Swans’ round 12 win over Gold Coast, come back into the team in place of Rhyce Shaw, who has been ruled out for two-to-three weeks with syndesmosis in his left ankle, and Tom Derickx who has been omitted from the side.

Speaking to SwansTV for Centrum Team Selection, John Longmire said Tippett and McGlynn were both significant inclusions for the club this week.

“They are important players for us,” Longmire said.

“Benny’s role in the midfield has been fantastic for us this year.

“He brings an enormous amount of run, speed and endurance-wise, and he’s really hard and puts pressure on the opposition.

“To get Kurt back as well in our front half is a good thing and hopefully he works really hard in our forward line.”

With Tippett returning to the side and Mike Pyke now with a full senior game under his belt, Longmire said changes had to be made in the ruck department for Saturday’s clash.

Longmire said Derickx, who has played 12 games for the Swans this year, was unlucky to miss out on selection after producing a number of promising performances this season.

“He’s been really good for us this year,” he said.

“We’ve been really pleased with how he’s gone and to be able to shoulder the whole ruck-load burden, which he’s been able to do for so long.

“Pykey, who obviously does a lot of the ruck work, will do that this week, but we’ve also got Sam Reid and Kurt Tippett who will be able to do some as well.

“It’s a big job for Pykey against (GWS ruckman Shane) Mumford, but hopefully he goes well and I’m sure we’ll see Tom Derickx again before too long.”

The coach also rued the loss of Shaw, who he said had been a consistent performer for the Swans this year.

“Shawy has been a really good player for us and his run, leadership and direction off half-back has been vital for us,” he said.

“Unfortunately he’s out of the team and we need to make sure we’re flexible and adaptable, and we made plans to do that, and we’re confident that whoever comes into the team and fills his spot will be able to do it.”

After a promising first senior game, draftee Zak Jones will get another opportunity this week against GWS.

Longmire said while he was impressed with Jones’ debut, the youngster still had plenty of work to do to establish himself as a regular senior player.

“He had a good start and everyone’s talked about how he came on and had an impact off the bench, which is a credit to him,” he said.

“That was a good thing, but that was last week, and he’s got an opportunity this week, and we need to make sure that we all take our chances this week and get our roles right and really contribute to the end result.”

Longmire said he expected his side would face a confident GWS outfit, who have produced back-to-back wins over Brisbane and Carlton over the last fortnight.

“Their form over the last month has been really solid,” Longmire said.

“If you look at their stats over the last month, they’ve been really good.

“We’re aware of what they can do, and are certainly aware of their talent levels and how hard they work.

“They work really hard for each other and they’ve got some great runners and we really need to play well to make sure we’re competitive against them.”

GWS has made one change to their side for Saturday night's Derby, with Jeremy Cameron returning at the expense of Tom Boyd.

Boyd, Jono O'Rourke and Zac Williams have been named as their emergencies.
