Cautious approach for Reid
Sydney Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron says the club will take a cautious approach with injured forward Sam Reid
Cameron confirmed that scans on Monday revealed a tear, which would sideline the 21-year-old until after the round 12 bye.
“He’s hurt his left quad and while it didn’t look too bad on the day and even Monday morning before his scan, the scan showed it to be a little bit larger than first thought, so the extent is a bit greater,” Cameron told SwansTV.
“We just need to be a little bit careful for a week or two and then we’ll start him running.
“It probably puts him out of contention really until after the bye, so three weeks.”
After missing seven matches, Swans defender Rhyce Shaw could make his long-awaited return from an abdominal injury this weekend.
Cameron said the defender had trained well over the weekend, and will be assessed following the Swans’ final training session on Thursday.
“He was running fast last week and was starting some skill work over the weekend,” Cameron said.
“He comes back into team training after a reasonable layoff and he’s keen to be out there.”
Fellow defender Marty Mattner will also face a fitness test ahead of this weekend after missing two weeks with hip soreness.
“He’s a chance and he was really close last week. He trained, but his hip just wasn’t quite right,” Cameron said.
“We’ll do the same again this week and he’s going to run today and train again Thursday and we’ll reassess things then.”
In other injury news, young Swan Harry Cunningham is likely to return for the Swans reserves’ first-versus-second clash with Belconnen this Saturday afternoon.
Cameron said the 19-year-old had made a swift recovery from a knee injury and should be available for selection this week.
“He hurt his medial ligament on his knee and he’s a bit like Rhyce in that he’s been doing some skill training since late last week,” he said.
“He’s having no problems at all so he’s going to fully train this week and all being well he’ll be out there on the weekend.”
