Sydney Swans defender Rhyce Shaw has taken a step forward in his recovery from a lower abdominal injury, which has sidelined him for more than ten weeks.
Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron told SwansTV that the defender resumed running this week after a setback hampered his rehabilitation a month ago.
“He had to stop training after hitting the training track a couple of weeks ago but he’s been able to get started running again,” Cameron said.
“It’s been a reasonable amount of time now since he’s played so he’s got a reasonable amount of fitness work to do, which he’ll be doing over the next couple of weeks.
“We’ll then be planning his training and return to play period then.”
Swans ruckman Shane Mumford has recovered well from facial surgery to mend a fractured cheekbone suffered in the Swans’ round 11 win over Adelaide.
Cameron said the 26-year-old is expected to start running at the end of the week.
“He’s recovered from his surgery well and he’s started some conditioning work and we’ll have him running at the end of the week, which will be good,” he said.
“We’ll get an idea of how his cheekbone is coping with that with the view to having him start training without contact as soon as possible.”
In other injury news, Cameron confirmed that Swans young guns Sam Reid and Lewis Jetta have both progressed well from their respective injuries over the bye week.
Cameron said both players would be assessed in the lead up to this weekend’s clash with Port Adelaide.
“Their rehab is coming along. Particularly Sam is up to running quite fast,” he said.
“Both of them will be tested on Thursday and we’re happy with their progression at the moment and we’ll get an idea of where they’re at on Thursday.”
Meanwhile, defender Alex Johnson has moved into the next stage of his recovery from a ruptured ACL, with the 20-year-old beginning his running program this week.
“He’s hit the period of time when the surgeon is happy for him to start running,” Cameron said.
“We’re really happy with how he’s going so we’ve got him started on that and he looked great running to start with and his pre-season sort of starts now.”
Cameron also confirmed that Gary Rohan is edging closer to his long-awaited return to the field.
“He’s getting close and he’s certainly doing that first full session of the week and he’s building the time in our main session.
“In another week or so he’ll be full training.”
