Three more years for Hanners
Sydney Swans midfielder Dan Hannebery has re-signed with the club until the end of the 2016 season
The 22-year-old, who has played 79 games for the Swans, re-signed with the club on Wednesday morning in a deal which will see Hannebery remain in the red and white until the end of the 2016 season.
Speaking to SwansTV after inking his new deal, the 2010 AFL Rising Star winner said his decision to stay on with the Swans was simple.
“I’m really happy with Sydney and we’ve got a great playing group and I’ve got lots of mates up here,” Hannebery said.
“I’m really settled in Sydney and I’ve just bought a new place and I’m loving my footy up here as well as my time out of footy, so it was a really easy decision in the end.
“It was great to get it done early in the year so I can focus on footy.”
Following on from his 2012 Grand Final heroics, Hannebery has already made a successful start to the season, notching up 23 and 24 possessions, respectively, in the Swans opening two matches.
Now committed for three more seasons, Hannebery said he hoped to continue to improve his game in the years to come.
“I think there is definitely still improvement to come from all players, including myself,” he said.
“I think we all try to get better each week as a team, and I think individually I’ve got some areas I need to work on and keep working on, and I think I just need to work on my consistency of performance over the year and try to elevate my game to another level.
“I’ve been working really closely with the other midfielders including Kizza (Kieren Jack), Joey (Josh Kennedy) and Macca (Jarrad McVeigh) who have helped me out as well as the coaches Leigh Tudor and Stewie Dew.
“We’re a good midfield group and we work pretty closely together and we’re looking forward to hopefully some more success this year.”
The young midfielder’s commitment is the latest key re-signing at the club, following on from co-captain Kieren Jack, Bob Skilton medallist Josh Kennedy, Norm Smith medallist Ryan O’Keefe and dual Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes already extending their contracts with the Swans this year.
Hannebery said the number of re-signings was indicative of the quality of the football club and the belief in the current playing group.
“I think it’s just a great club,” he said.
“The Swans have been really good to me since I started here and I’ve had a lot of great mentors since I started.
“We’ve got a really good list and a lot of guys who have a lot of improvement in them, from young to the middle-aged guys and even the older guys can keep improving.
“The coaching group, the players, the staff and just the club itself is a great place to be around and is a great place to play footy and I can’t think of any better place to be than the Swans.”
