Witness history at the SCG
The Sydney Swans 2012 premiership flag will be unfurled at the SCG this Saturday afternoon
The last time the premiership flag was unveiled at the SCG was in round two, 2006, following the Swans drought-breaking premiership win the previous season and Swans General Manager – Membership, Ticketing & Fan Development, Natalie Fagg was there in 2006 to celebrate the occasion.
“It was packed at the SCG and it was a beautiful sunny afternoon and the unfurling happened well before the start of the main game,” Fagg recalled of the day.
“There were lots of people involved – members in particular – as well as volunteers of the club and life members and long-term staff members.
“It went for a bit of a lap of honour carried by some significant people around the football club, not always in terms of profile.
“I remember the head of our volunteers, Dot Oliver who is unfortunately no longer with us, carried it around, and she just thought it was the most amazing thing, and it was a bit emotional and very nice.”
Swans supporters will again be involved in the unfurling of the flag this season, with seven lucky members selected to play special roles in the ceremony this weekend. Swans members Scott McLellan, Karen Lingard, Isabella Skulley, Kerry Howard, Nicole Klarnett, Charles O’Brien and Stephen Wild will all take the field on Saturday for the official unfurling of the flag.
Fagg said the selected members were all chosen as part of the ‘It’s in the Blood’ membership recognition program.
“We’ve invited seven members along to be involved representing the whole range of members we have in our membership base,” she said.
“We’ve invited a first-year member, a 10-year member, a 14-year member, a 20-year member, a 25-year member and a foundation member, who were all picked at random.
“Importantly, one of the members chosen was from our Victorian member base, so there will be someone representing our south of the border members.”
Fagg encouraged all Swans members and supporters to turn out for Saturday’s historic occasion, which will cap the club’s 2012 premiership celebrations, adding that the occasion would also be a great opportunity for fans who did not attend last year’s Grand Final.
“I think the history and the significance of the event itself is why members and supporters should come out, especially for those who didn’t make it to Melbourne and couldn’t watch the team run around on the last day of September,” Fagg said.
“This is their opportunity to honour that moment and honour that victory and get involved that way and it also puts a nice full stop on that year.
“It also sends a nice message to the playing group for 2013.”
