Sydney Swans defender Shane Biggs will make his AFL debut in tomorrow night’s round 23 clash against Hawthorn at ANZ Stadium.

Biggs, who was elevated from the rookie list to the Swans’ senior list in round 18, is the club’s fourth rookie elevation for the year and tomorrow night will become the Swans’ sixth debutant in 2013.

Speaking to SwansTV after being named in the side, Biggs said his last month of football had been a whirlwind experience.

“It has all happened quickly after I was elevated and then I was an emergency a few times, and now I’m just rapt to get the opportunity,” Biggs said.

“I’ve just been thrown in there but I can’t wait.”

The 22-year-old Biggs said he had to contain his excitement after being told by coach John Longmire on Wednesday afternoon that he’d earned the call up to senior level.

“I found out on (Wednesday) night and Horse came up and told me in the late afternoon,” he said.

“I couldn’t really call my mum and dad until I got home, and I was at the club all day, so when I got home I rang them and put them on loud speaker and they were ecstatic.

“Mum was a bit emotional but it was all good.

“My mum goes for the Hawks so it will be a bit of a thing back home, but she will support me and I’m just pumped to be in there.”

After a quiet first 12 months at the club, Biggs, who was recruited to the Swans from the Bendigo Bombers in the 2012 Rookie Draft, said he had no choice but to step up his work rate and all-round game if he wanted to earn a senior opportunity in his second year.

“I sort of had to work really hard after last year being a rookie and then getting another go at it,” he said.

“I’ve just been working hard defensively.

“I just have that defend-first mentality that they have been trying to put into my head and then the offence comes from that.

“I had to try to work hard and do my best and hopefully it’s paying off now.”

Biggs said he couldn’t wait to run out onto ANZ Stadium alongside his team mates when the Swans face first-placed Hawthorn tomorrow night.

“I think running out will be a real eye-opener and just experiencing that and then hopefully once the game starts the nerves will drop down and I can just play and do my bit.”
