Sydney Swans reserves coach Jared Crouch has praised the efforts of his young group in Sunday afternoon’s NEAFL Eastern Conference grand final win over Belconnen at Kippax Oval.

Crouch said the Swans reserves’ win over the Magpies in front of a vocal Belconnen crowd was testament to his team’s commitment to playing a hard, strong brand of football on the big stage.

“It’s exciting for our group of players,” Crouch told SwansTV after the match.

“It’s a different group of players to what we’ve had the last few years and a lot of young guys who are trying to make their way in the football world.

“They’ve all spoken about wanting to play well in big games and on big occasions and they certainly did that.”

The team led at every change and ran away with a 52-point win over the Magpies, led by reserves captain Jed Lamb and Alex Jesaulenko Medallist Tony Armstrong, who was dynamic off the half back line for the visitors.

Crouch said he was thrilled to see Armstrong, who has played 15 senior games for the Swans since he was traded from Adelaide at the end of 2011, return to some of his best form in Sunday’s victory.

“It was a good even contribution from everyone and I was really pleased for Tony Armstrong as well for him playing so well,” the coach said.

“He’s a good ball user when he’s playing his best football and he certainly did that.”

“For a lot of these guys, who knows what opportunities will come before them in the next couple of weeks.”

While Armstrong’s individual effort was a stand out for the Swans reserves, Crouch also highlighted the superb work of the team’s back six, including key position players Xavier Richards, Alex Brown and Jordan Lockyer.

“The back six were very good all day and they’ve played a lot of footy together, which was excellent,” Crouch said.

“The big keys in the Richards, Lockyer, Brown and Dick, they brought the ball to ground and then the other guys at their feet were able to take it away.

“I think (the win) was set up by our back six who probably at different times were put under a bit of pressure but they won their one on one contests, and then guys like Armstrong worked hard to get involved with the ball movement.”

The coach also identified 2012 draftee Tim Membrey, who finished the match as the Swans reserves' leading goal scorer with three goals, as another key contributor to the club’s win.

Sunday’s victory has propelled the Swans reserves into the NEAFL Grand Final against the Brisbane Lions in Brisbane next weekend.

After losing their last three clashes against the Lions, the Swans reserves will enter next week’s decider with the underdog status and Crouch said it would take his team’s best performance to upset the Lions on their home turf.

“Unfortunately we haven’t been able to knock them off in our three times, but it’s another opportunity and a big game,” he said.

“The boys enjoyed this experience and we’ll go down to Brisbane together and we’ll no doubt enjoy that experience as well.”
