Sydney Swans utility Lewis Roberts-Thomson could miss this weekend’s NAB Cup clash with Gold Coast after sustaining a calf injury in Sunday night’s loss to St Kilda.

Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said Roberts-Thomson left the ground with a sore calf after half time following a heavy fall late in the second term.

“Lewis landed heavily in the game and jarred his back and persevered and played on into the third quarter,” Cameron told SwansTV.

“Unfortunately after that he tightened up in his calf on the other side (of half time), so we had to sub him out of the game.”

Cameron said Roberts-Thomson would face a test this week ahead of Saturday night’s round three clash against the Suns at Blacktown.

“We’ll see how he goes this week,” he said.

“It’s a short week so if he’s improved sufficiently then we’ll put him up to play, but if things haven’t improved enough then we might have to wait.”

Swans forward Tommy Walsh is also unlikely to take the field this weekend following a back injury sustained at training last week.

“Tommy hurt his back right in the last session last week and was quite sore immediately afterwards so we couldn’t really send him down to Melbourne with that, but things have improved since,” Cameron said.

“We scanned his back and he does have an issue with one of the discs in his back, but we’ll just see how this week progresses in terms of getting him back training and playing.

“I’d suggest he’s not going to play this week but could hopefully be the week after.”

In other injury news, Cameron confirmed that premiership players Nick Malceski and Mitch Morton were good chances of making their return this weekend.

“(Malceski) hurt his calf and he wasn’t quite ready to play last week, but he started training again today, so he should be OK,” he said.

Cameron said Morton, who suffered a back injury during the pre-season, would play either this weekend or the following week.

“Mitch hurt his back about two weeks ago, which just affected his preparation for NAB one and two,” he said.

“He’s back training now so we think he’s going to be playing in the next two weeks.”

Swans coach John Longmire said yesterday that Adam Goodes, Rhyce Shaw and Shane Mumford were also in contention to make their first appearances of the pre-season campaign.

The Sydney Swans will face the Gold Coast Suns at Blacktown International Sportspark from 7pm this Saturday night. More details are available here .
