Development Coach Jeremy Laidler gave his thoughts on his reserves sides hit out with Hawthorn on Saturday, noting that despite strong moments, the squad will look to stick to their structure more diligently in to the future.
“We probably let ourselves down a little bit after a good couple of weeks,” Laidler said.
“It was an even contest early in the game, but we started to slip away from our fundamentals, losing some communication. We showed some good signs but we need to maintain that moving forward.”
Laids also took some time to give an update on some of the boys after their performance during the scrimmage.
Matt Ling
“He’s played consecutive games now, really locking in to the small defender role. His positioning and tracking have been really solid, he’s a true competitor. Going up against guys like Paul Puopolo I think he did really well.”
Sam Reid
“Reidy got through his second game and looked really strong in the air - he took some great marks and hit the scoreboard while also going back where required. He’s got a great ability to play at both ends.”
Sam Wicks
“Sam is really focusing in on what his role is, playing the pressure role you need to adapt and we’re happy with his progress. He’s working on hurrying up his opposition and he showed that on the weekend, whilst also being able to ht the scoreboard where he can.”
Jack Maibaum
"I’ve been working closely with Jack, he obviously missed a lot of footy last year through injury, but with 3 or 4 games back in the side he’s playing that key defender role really well. He knows what he needs to work on and his focus on maintaining his performance for four quarters has been really good, he did well playing on some key forwards.”
Laidler also thanked his opposition in the Hawthorn Hawks for providing a strong contest for his side.
