The Sydney Swans reserves notched another impressive win on the weekend, continuing their assault on the scoreboard with a 155-point win over Tuggeranong at Canberra’s Greenway Oval.

The Swans killed the contest off early with an 11 goal to one first quarter, before continuing their domination for the remainder of the game to push past the 30-goal mark for the second week in a row.

Swans reserves coach Henry Playfair told SwansTV that he challenged his players to play well in Canberra and he was pleased with how they responded.

“That was the challenge for the week, to maintain our high standards set in the last fortnight and to start like that was really pleasing,” Playfair said.

“All over the ground we were pretty dominant in the first quarter, but in the second quarter we dropped off our standards which we addressed at halftime, and the boys came out and played pretty well in the second half.”

Trent Dennis-Lane led the way on the scoreboard by following up his nine goal effort against Queanbeyan the week before with a 12 goal game against Tuggeranong, with Playfair describing it as a better performance.

“It was a good all-round game from Trent actually,” he said.

“Some of his pressure got him some goals as well, which is what we are trying to ram home with him, so it was really pleasing to see him bring together a good four-quarter game in all aspects that we’ve been working on with him.”

Nathan Gordon and Matt Spangher also continued their good forward line form, kicking three and five goals respectively to give them double figure returns from the past two games.

Playfair said he was also impressed by the improved work rate and form of Byron Sumner, who was named amongst the Swans best for the second successive week.

“He’s been working flat out, probably harder than any other player on his fitness,” Playfair said.

“It’s great to see him have that drive and desire to play seniors, and that certainly showed through on the weekend.”

Playfair said he expected a more thorough examination of his team’s form this weekend when they travel north to play the Gold Coast Suns reserves at Metricon Stadium as the curtain-raiser for the seniors.

“They are a really talented list,” he said.

“They won by 100 points on the weekend and have been playing some really good footy - I think they’re second on the ladder in the Northern competition - so travelling up there will be a great test for our players and I’m looking forward to it.”
