Recruiting manager Stuart Maxfield speaks with sydneyswans.com.au about the outcomes of the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

Draft summary
"We were after a key position player and a genuine midfielder. We’ve got both of those and a bonus tacked on the end with Campbell Heath as a young skilful player.

"Jackson Trengove was always in the mix for us but we went for Lewis Johnston instead. Particularly with our first two selections we wanted to get a key position player and a genuine midfielder. As we had them ranked, Lewis Johnston was a real priority for us. Jackson was in the mix, he’s a quality kid, hard as nails."

Selection No. 12 – Lewis Johnston
North Adelaide, SA, tall forward, March 3, 1991, 192.8cm, 83.7kg
"He’s had a pretty consistent year. We looked at our list and realised key position players were a priority for us. He’s got some fantastic physical attributes too. He’s quick, has good endurance and good pace. One of the other things about him is when he’s stepped up to the next level is that he’s excelled. He’s got great hands under pressure and has all those quality attributes that will hold him in good stead to develop him into a quality key position player at AFL level."

Selection No. 30 – Daniel Hannebery
Oakleigh Chargers, VIC, midfielder, February 24, 1991, 181.7cm, 76.7kg
"He’s an elite endurance runner, an elite athlete. When you get a lot of young players to a football club they need two or three years to build up their endurance base but Dan’s fortunately not in that category. He’s already got that box ticked. He’s a great decision maker and a great kick of the football. He’s certainly a player that we’re confident will play 200 plus games for the Sydney Swans."

Selection No. 61 – Campbell Heath
Gippsland Power, VIC, midfielder, April 1, 1991, 187cm, 75kg
"He is another 17-year-old so with the two upcoming drafts, we looked at all the 17-year-olds available this year. He didn’t dominate TAC Cup football this year but in every game he showed he’s got an AFL attribute. He’s a talented kid and a great kick of the ball as a left-footer. He’s another guy we expect to develop pretty quickly over the next two years."
