After six-weeks on the sidelines with a quad tear, the dual Brownlow medallist has proven his fitness ahead of Friday night’s match against the reigning premiers.
Swans coach John Longmire said he admired Goodes’ commitment to his recovery process over the last month.
“Goodes has done everything the medical staff and conditioning staff have wanted him to do over the last six weeks,” Longmire told sydneyswans.com.au.
“He’s ramped it up a fair bit over the last few weeks and trained really well in our final training session.
“He’s also made sure he’s right from a fitness/touch perspective for when he comes back and plays.”
Longmire said he expects Goodes to play a role within the Swans side tomorrow night, but has not placed grand expectations on the Swans star.
“We know he can play a number of roles for us, so he’ll play forward and midfield and the percentage of those depends on how he is feeling and also how the game is going,” he said.
“We’ll probably mix up where he plays a little bit, and it will have a lot to do with how the game is going as it always tends to do.
“The reality of it is that we can’t just expect him to come in and turn it on, the other players in the team need to keep doing what they’ve been doing over the last couple of weeks.”
Small forward Ben McGlynn will also return to the side after missing last round’s contest with Essendon through suspension.
Longmire said the Swans will welcome the lively forward back to the side after two weeks off.
“It’s good to get Benny back,” he said.
“He missed one game with suspension and then another through the bye week, so he’s feeling really fresh and he’s an important player for us.
“When he’s at his best he’s outstanding. He chases, he tackles and he can play a couple of different roles for us as well, so he’s an important player to get back in the team.”
Trent Dennis-Lane and Nick Malceski are the two Swans who have been left out of tomorrow night’s side.
Longmire said this week’s selection was a challenge for the match committee, with so many players pushing for senior selection.
“Trent Dennis-Lane has been pretty good for us over a number of weeks and maybe dropped a little bit last round against Essendon, but generally before that he’s been playing pretty well,” he said.
“But we’ve just got to a week in selection, where we’re bringing Goodes and McGlynn in, that we needed to make some decisions about who goes out of the team.
“There is no doubt (having many players available) is a good predicament to be in.”
