HOT CONDITIONS in Melbourne and back-to-back NAB Cup matches proved too much as Geelong defeated the Sydney Swans by 16 points in game two at Etihad Stadium.

The Swans started the match much as they against the Saints a game earlier, matching Geelong across the ground to go into half-time even on the scoreboard.

But the Cats came out purring in the second-half with Chris Scott's men booting two unanswered goals to win 0.4.5 (29) to 0.2.1 (13).

In his first game as Geelong captain, Joel Selwood was his usually industrious self, amassing 11 possessions in the first half and finishing with 15.

Selwood was one of only eight premiership players who took part in the game - the others were Trent West, Tom Lonergan, Josh Hunt, Harry Taylor, Mitch Duncan, Andrew Mackie and Mathew Stokes, who was one of the subs.

The depth of talent on Geelong's list was on show, with three of the Cats' four goals scored by players who are yet to make their AFL debut.

Two of those goal-scorers, George Burbury and Josh Walker are on the club's rookie list.

Billie Smedts, the club's number one pick in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft showed poise and skill while playing on the wing and across half-back.

He finished with seven possessions.

Geelong's 29-year-old debutant Orren Stephenson took the first bounce, and won the hit-out against Mark Seaby.

He ended his first game in navy blue and white with four possessions, one nice contested mark on the forward flank, and nine hit-outs.

On a hot Melbourne evening - it was still 32 degrees when the game started - the Swans, who had impressively beaten St Kilda in game one, simply ran out of legs.

They registered the first goal of the game courtesy of an accurate snap from speedster Lewis Jetta, but they enjoyed few highlights after that.

There was a moment of controversy during the second half when the game was held up for more than a minute because a video replay was needed to determine whether a long kick at goal from Geelong's Andrew Mackie had gone through for a goal or been touched on the line.

Inconclusive replays resulted in the umpire's original decision - touched on the line - standing.
