Reserves slug it out against Tigers
The Sydney Swans reserves have kept their winning streak alive with a 49-point win over the Queanbeyan Tigers...
The Sydney Swans reserves have recorded another comfortable home victory, this time by 49 points over the Queanbeyan Tigers at a soggy Lakeside Oval this afternoon.
The Swans jumped out of the blocks with the first three goals of the game before Queanbeyan hit back to take a one-point lead into the first change. However, the Swans were able to take the lead in the early stages of the second quarter and never relinquished it for the remainder of the afternoon.
Queanbeyan kept fighting throughout the game and got to within 22 points of the Swans at the last break after they kicked the last three goals of the third quarter. The Swans kicked four goals to nil in the final term and were content to leave the field with a 49-point win in wet and squally conditions.
Paul Bevan led the way for the Swans, playing well in a number of roles. He was most effective as a lone centre-half forward at the beginning of the third quarter where he was involved in the Swans first four goals of the second half - including one of his two for the afternoon. He then pushed into midfield and defence and continually put his head over the ball, as well as laying some ferocious tackles.
As well as Bevan, Queanbeyan struggled to contain the forward pairing of Jesse White and Jarred Moore, who finished with nine goals between them. In the windy conditions, White showed the advantage of accurate kicking for goal; he also spent time in the ruck where he showed a great ability to win the ball at ground level. Moore divided his time between the midfield and attack, and showed his usual level of drive and determination, capping off another fine game with three goals.
Campbell Heath spoke during the week of developing his defensive role to become more of a playmaker, and he delivered this afternoon. His foots skills into attack were first-rate, and he drifted forward to convert two classy goals.
The combination of Dylan McNeil and Dan Currie in the middle of the ground was a win for the Swans. McNeil was at the bottom of most packs over the course of the game and dished out the ball to the likes of Byron Sumner who was able to use his run-and-carry effectively. Currie has strung together his best two weeks of football for the year and has relished the responsibility of being the lead ruckman.
The Swans reserves remain undefeated, three games and percentage clear on top of the NEAFL Eastern Conference ladder. They face cross-town rivals GWS next Saturday at Blacktown Olympic Park.
