Reserves make it three in a row
The Swans Reserves have defeated Queanbeyan...
The game was the Swans’ best for the season with the Reserves playing very disciplined football and applying high tackling pressure.
Matthew O’Dwyer was the best player at half back, while Amon Buchanan and Jared Crouch, on ball, were also impressive. Kristin Thornton made an impact playing at halfback and half forward as did Jarred Moore and Tim Schmidt who also played on ball.
Leo Barry, in his first game back after an extended period, looked sharp and seemed to enjoy his time in the forward line, kicking three goals.
The Swans were 32 points up at quarter time after kicking seven goals to two in the first term. Brendan Murphy kicked three goals, his first after chasing the ball as it bounced along the ground and kicking it up to himself in typical Irish fashion. Daniel O’Keefe, Crouch, Jake Orreal and Taylor Gilchrist also kicked goals.
In the second term the Swans kicked nine goals to extend the margin to 85 points by half time. Barry, Nathan Gordon and Matthew Laidlaw kicked two goals each and top-up player Liam Greenwell, Moore and Ryan Brabazon kicked one each. O’Keefe left the field in the second quarter after he rolled his ankle, but should return to the field next week.
By the third break the margin was 110 points after the Swans kicked five goals while Queanbeyan only managed one. Laidlaw made it four in the third quarter kicking two goals. The additional goal kickers were Barry, Brabazon and scholarship player Matt May.
Queanbeyan had their best quarter in the last term, kicking four goals but the Swans piled on another five to again extend their lead. Moore kicked two goals to add to the one he kicked in the second term while Thornton, Buchanan and top-up player Matt Smith made it 26 goals to the Swans for the game.
The Swans are sitting in fifth place on the ladder and have a bye this weekend. They will face Belconnen, who are currently leading the competition, on Saturday 1 August at the SCG at 3.50pm.
