Reid plans to muscle up
Premiership forward Sam Reid is keen to pile on the kilos and become one of the strongmen of the competition
EMERGING Sydney Swans forward Sam Reid has revealed he plans to get stronger so he can be the one dishing it out and throwing players around.
Still only 20, Reid kicked 31 goals - the third highest tally at the premiership winning club - behind Lewis Jetta (45) and Adam Goodes (37).
The 195cm Reid has developed into a key target man in the Swans' forward 50 with his athletic leaping and ability to take a mark.
Describing his season as "alright", Reid, who signed a five-year deal with the Swans in late 2011, said he wanted to work on his body strength.
"I think this year it improved and I was able to break even and not be thrown out of the way so easily by some of the bigger defenders," Reid told AAP.
"I'd love to take the next stage and be the one dishing it out and being able to throw defenders away."
Reid was wary of stacking on too many kilos during the summer.
"You can't put on too much weight, being such a running game that it is," Reid said.
"It's about steadily putting on weight, but at the same time maintaining my running."
Reid emphasised he got plenty of help up forward from a number of talls and several midfielders, with nine Swans kicking at least 20 goals.
He wasn't always confined to a key forward spot and recognised the value he could add by playing other roles.
"That's what I try to bring to my game, not so much being able to do one thing and start being able to do a range of things," Reid said.
"I played a few different roles this year high up the ground and also as a deep forward, the more strings I add to my bow the better."
Reid said the Swans had a really good age mix.
Midfielder Kieren Jack also cited the need for the Swans to keep promoting and developing their youngsters.
"You probably saw this year the rise of Lewis Jetta and Dan Hannebery and Alex Johnson - we'll need that younger group to keep continue to improve and bring in other players as well," Jack said.
