Reserves rise over Suns
The Sydney Swans reserves made it four successive wins when they defeated the Gold Coast Suns reserves by 53 points today...
The Sydney Swans reserves have reversed recent poor results against the Gold Coast Suns reserves, turning the tables to record a 53-point victory against the Suns in wet conditions at Blacktown Olympic Park this afternoon.
The Suns had beaten the Swans by 36 (round 3, 2012) and 79 points (round 15, 2011) in the previous two meetings between the clubs, but could never get in front on this occasion as the Swans proved too strong to record their fourth straight win, with an average of 95 points in the last four rounds.
Matt Spangher led the way for the Swans with four first half goals which set the tone for his team mates with a combination of strong marking and clean crumbing around the pack combined with accurate kicking in the conditions.
Andrejs Everitt was another who got on the scoreboard with two goals in the first half; his first another amazing torpedo from well outside 50 off a step, while the Swans’ number 13 brought up his second with another long bomb, this time after being found with a pass from ruckman Mark Seaby.
The Swans spread the load in the second half to finish the game with nine goalkickers, with the Eastern Conference’s leading goalkicker Mitch Morton getting on the end of the final two goals to take his tally for the match to four, and his season total to 40.
As impressive as the Swans attack was, the defence also stood tall, especially in the first three quarters where they restricted the Suns to just three goals. While the visitors finished strongly with five goals in the final term, the Swans kept fighting until the end, highlighted by a rundown tackle from Jesse White on Suns’ ruckman Josh Fraser that led to a mark and goal inside 50 for Seaby.
The midfield was also strong and controlled the game with Seaby strong in the ruck, and White providing a contest around the ground providing the Swans’ dynamic on-ball division with first use of the ball for the majority of the match.
The Sydney Swans reserves are back on the road next weekend as they travel down to the nation’s capital to take on the top team in the Eastern Conference, Queanbeyan, at Dairy Farmers.
