Sydney midfielder Josh Kennedy says it was his team’s ability to lock down the game in its crucial stages which lead to the Swans 13 point win over the Dockers at the SCG today.

Kennedy, who notched up 36 touches, 22 contested possessions and 11 clearances, said it was a team effort by the Swans to stem the flow of a charging Fremantle side in the last quarter.

“It was a really tough contest and we knew that Freo would give that to us,” Kennedy told SwansTV.

“We saw them last week and we knew how hard they were at the ball and we wanted to match that and take it to a new level this week and I think we did for the most part of the game.

“They did hit a little bit harder than us and we relaxed a little (in the third quarter) and probably thought we were going alright, but we were able to steady in the last quarter and really lock it down which is something we pride ourselves on and it was really good to get away with the win in the end.”

Kennedy highlighted a number of standout individual performances within his team, who he believed contributed to the Swans tough win over the Dockers.

“Full credit to our defence because a lot of guys played some really good roles today,” he said.

“Birdy on Fyfe, Kizza and Shawy on Hille, and Parker did a great job on Pav when he was in the guts.

“Also Seaby coming in late for Mummy, because it was a really big ask against Sandilands and he put in a really good effort.”

Swans co-captain Jarrad McVeigh promoted Kennedy’s performance, which saw him finish as the game’s leading possession getter.

“(Kennedy’s) been super, he’s a really good contested player and he is also kicking goals as well, so he can add that as a string to his bow,” he said.

“He’s just been really good these last two weeks.”

McVeigh was also complimentary of the performances of some of the Swans young guns, including forward duo Lewis Jetta and Sam Reid.

“Jetts has really found a new work rate now and he’s been learning for a couple of years and now he’s up and running back and forward and he’s really getting on the end of it now,” he said.

“Reidy is really kicking straight at the moment, which is good for him.”

McVeigh added that a heroic tackle by 150-gamer Lewis Roberts Thomson played an important role in stopping the Dockers onslaught late in the third term.

“We can’t have teams kicking six goals in a row against us, two or three should be max, but I think a tackle there by Lewis Roberts-Thomson got us back and we kicked a goal and then the (three-quarter time) siren went so we could reassess.”

Speaking after the game, Roberts-Thomson said he was thrilled to celebrate his milestone game as a part of such a great win for the club.

“The effort today was fantastic and for it to be my 150th, it was just great to be a part of it and to get such a solid win.”
