Just under four months since his horrific leg injury, Swans youngster Gary Rohan is well on the road to recovery.

The 21-year-old, who fractured his tibia in round four against North Melbourne, has begun walking and is edging closer to his goal of running ahead of the pre-season.

“The surgeon said I would be running in October, but I’m a bit ahead of schedule and that’s without pushing, so I’m quite happy,” Rohan told SwansTV.

“I’m very thrilled and I just can’t wait to start running again.”

It’s been a long and slow process for Rohan, who was limited to crutches and a moonboot for over a month after the incident.

Rohan made use of his time out of the game, returning home to Cobden on a number of occasions as well as catching up on study for his Personal Training course.

He admitted that during that time he had plenty of ‘down’ days while watching his team mates play, but said things are now starting to look up.

“It’s been quite tough and I’ve had some up and down days,” Rohan said.

“It’s quite hard watching (the team) and sitting on the sidelines and I can’t do much.

“But the leg is feeling well and is getting better every day.

“I’m feeling more confident on it, which is good.

“Now I’m walking around outside and am doing a lot of weights on it, which is good.”

Rohan’s competitive streak has not diminished throughout his recovery, with the player now aiming to outdo his own walking times around the SCG.

He said he is already clocking time at a ‘record’ pace, and is pushing himself further each session.

“I’m doing two laps (of the SCG) at the moment and I’m trying to beat nine minutes,” he said.

“I walked it in 7.55 last week, so I’m breaking records at the moment!

“They’re little steps but I’m getting better every day.”
