Brett Kirk and Lewis Jetta went for a stroll on the SCG recently and got to chatting about the season ahead. It didn’t take long before the livewire Jetta was sharing his vision for what might happen when he plays his first match at the Swans’ traditional home ground.
Kirk recalled their conversation at the Club’s Fan Day at the SCG on Sunday. Kirk was in the media zone, set up so fans could play reporter and ask questions of the players, when a savvy female supporter asked him where the team would find extra midfield run this year.
“We’ve already seen Lewis Jetta coming up and showing some excitement and electrifying speed,’’ Kirk said.
“I had a walk on the SCG with Lewis a few weeks ago and he was talking about me and Jude hitting in and winning the ball and farming it out to him on the wing, and him taking four bounces and putting it on Adam Goodes’ chest,’’ Kirk laughed.
It’s a sight all Swans’ fans will hope they see in 2010. Jetta is still no certainty to play in round one, but at the fan day Kirk and development coach Stuart Dew both predicted Jetta and the Club’s top draft pick Gary Rohan were likely to make their senior debuts in the early part of the season.
Both have been selected in the squad of 24 to fly to Narrandera for the practice match against North Melbourne this Friday night, which will be the team’s final hitout before the round one game against St Kilda at ANZ Stadium on March 27.
Kirk believes the side will boast more speed this year and can’t wait for the season proper to start.
“Speed was something we really focused on in the draft and through the trade period,’’ Kirk said. “We had a few players who were very similar, and while we’ve got really strong worker bees who get in and get the footy, we needed balance with that outside speed.
“Guys like Jetta and Gary Rohan have got a lot of speed, so that’s what we wanted from the draft,’’ Kirk said.
Kirk also believes regular backline players Marty Mattner and Rhyce Shaw might push into the midfield more this year, now that Tadhg Kennelly is back from Ireland and Nick Malceski is in good form.
“We can’t have all those guys in defence so maybe a Mattner or a Rhyce Shaw might push up to the wings and Kieren Jack might play a bit more outside, so our inside-outside balance through the midfield is going to be much better this year,’’ Kirk said.
And then, Kirk said, he and Jude Bolton can feed the “honey’’ to a few more players.
“As (John Longmire) said recently, we won’t have so many bees in the honeypot this year.
“When we have all the players going in, it looks a bit like an under 10s game where you have all the kids following the football and all the bees in the honeypot. So Jude and I are the worker bees and chase the honey, and we need a few queen bees on the outside!’’ Kirk said.
Media zone with Adam Goodes, Daniel Bradshaw, Stuart Dew & Nick Malceski, who were scheduled to take questions from the floor prior to Kirk's session.
