Lockyer’s late start
Swans first-year player Jordan Lockyer speaks about the late start to his season following an injury last month...
Sydney Swans draftee Jordan Lockyer hopes to be back on the football field within the next month.
The West Australian, who was picked up by the Swans at number 43 in last year's AFL draft, completed his first pre-season with the club before injury set back his progress.
“I had a few knee problems a few months ago which lasted for about four weeks,” Lockyer told sydneyswans.com.au.
“Then I came back and played one game and got through it and played my 60 minutes, but then the second game back with five minutes to go in the first quarter I did my hammy."
Lockyer said he hopes his latest injury will be his final concern for the season, so he can get his year back on track.
“I’m out for three to four weeks, and two of them have already gone, so I’m probably on track to come back in two weeks’ time and probably start training in about a week and a half,” he said.
“It’s been really frustrating especially when I’d done the majority of the pre-season and had been going really well.
“I’ve been doing mainly upper body training, but now I’m into light running, so I’ll gradually build that up until I can get into full training again.”
The 18-year old is no stranger to the football world, with his father Andrew Lockyer a former player for the West Coast Eagles.
But Lockyer said there is no doubt the lifestyle of the professional footballer has changed dramatically since his dad was playing in the league.
“I think it’s completely changed since he played, it’s just completely different,” he said.
“There are heaps of commitments, and last year I asked a few guys who were already in the AFL system what they did with their time and they said they were at the club six days a week and I really couldn’t believe that.
“Now I’m here I can see that we really are at the club six days a week, doing everything from recovery to yoga and doing everything you can to make sure you’re ready to go and that your body is fit and firing.”
Lockyer said his aim for the rest of the year was to get back on the field, and put his name up via some consistent games in the reserves.
“I hope to play some really good reserves footy and push for that senior selection, but right now I really have to focus on getting my body right and getting out there and playing good footy again.”
