Young Swans midfielder Luke Parker’s 2012 season has got off to a fast start.

The 19-year-old, who played 13 games in his debut season last year, has slotted seamlessly into the Swans midfield rotation and currently sits third in disposals at the club after five rounds, behind only ball magnet Josh Kennedy and co-captain Jarrad McVeigh.

In case you haven’t seen a Swans game this year, Parker is adept at putting his head over the ball and winning it in heavy traffic around the stoppages. As a result he currently ranks second at the club in contested possessions and equal-second in clearances.

But like some of the older campaigners around him, such as Jude Bolton and Ryan O’Keefe, Parker is certainly not letting any hype around the Swans undefeated start to the season distract him from the next task on the horizon - an in-form Adelaide Crows outfit at the SCG this Saturday night.

“At the moment there’s a bit of confidence going around the club … but really I don’t think the boys are getting too carried away,” Parker said ahead of the Swans first training session of the week today.

“We keep a level head and just focus on Adelaide this week.”

Parker said the Swans depth of inside and outside midfielders, as well as the mix of youth and experience, has made the on-ball division a tough prospect to match up against.

“The young guys (have) been given the opportunity to go through the midfield, (and) it gives the older guys a bit of a chop out,” he said.

“I think the coaches are happy with the depth that is able to go through the midfield at the moment, like Joey Kennedy, Hanners (Dan Hannebery), Kieren Jack as more of the younger blokes, and Jude Bolton, Ryan O’Keefe and Jarrad McVeigh, are also able to come through the midfield when they’re needed.

“When we all work together, and play to our structures and play our role, I think we can match it with any midfield.”

Fresh from consecutive battles against deep midfields in North Melbourne and Hawthorn’s, the Swans face another tough challenge this weekend when the Crows come to town.

The match will pit the number one and two ranked contested possession teams so far this season against each other, and will also see three of the season’s top five contested possession winners in action. Josh Kennedy currently leads the league in the key stat with 84, while Crows pair Patrick Dangerfield (77) and Scott Thompson (74) rank fourth and fifth respectively.

Parker said he is looking forward to facing off against a side riding high with only one defeat so far in 2012, and a record of 21 wins against the Swans from the two club’s previous 31 meetings.

“Last year they did knock us off, so hopefully we’ll be looking to get back,” Parker said.

“If we bring the same mindset as we did to Hawthorn, there’s no doubt we can have a chance at knocking off the Crows.

“We’re trying to make it so (the SCG) is our fortress and we want a winning streak here. That’s what we want to come across as and hopefully we can keep that going.”
