Reserves' class too strong for Uni
The Sydney Swans reserves proved too strong for Sydney University in this afternoon's NEAFL clash...
The Sydney Swans reserves put last weekend’s accuracy woes behind them, putting on a goalkicking show in this afternoon’s 202-point victory over Sydney University at Blacktown International Sportspark.
After starting last Saturday night’s loss to NT Thunder in Darwin with 1.7 in the opening term, the Swans had their kicking boots on in today’s game, kicking 13.4 in the opening quarter and 38.11 for the entire match.
The Swans kicked the opening four goals of the game from open play after playing on at every possible occasion, before a string of set-shot goals followed in the remaining three-and-a-half quarters.
Nathan Gordon started the run of goals for the Swans with the first of the afternoon, and finished the game with ten majors. Gordon registered eight goals in the opening half, with the Sydney Uni defence having no answer for his strong hands and ability to find space in the forward 50. He could have finished with a couple more goals of his own, but twice unselfishly passed off to Mitch Morton who was better positioned closer to goal.
Morton obliged Gordon’s passes, and many more, as he notched up ten goals of his own. His marking on the lead and accuracy around goal was a feature of the second half, as was his trademark running snap after playing on from marks inside 50. Morton’s tenth goal - the final goal of the game - extended the margin beyond 200 points.
Swans talls Mike Pyke and Jesse White worked well together, rotating between the ruck and deep in the forward line. Both players kicked three goals each, and won their share of hit-outs, both in the middle and around the ground.
Jarred Moore and Brett Meredith sharked the bulk of the ball around the contests and were key driving forces in the Swans victory, while Tony Armstrong got his hands on plenty of outside ball and was a vital link between the Swans defence and attack.
Tommy Walsh presented well for the Swans throughout the game and showed a liking for crashing packs, taking several strong contested marks. As well as Morton, Walsh was also a main avenue to goal for the Swans in the second half, finishing the game with four.
Tom Mitchell had his first run for the Swans this afternoon, showing a brief cameo of the skill he possesses. The 18-year-old was involved in the play which led to the first goal of the game, and midway through the second quarter he found Pyke in the middle of the ground with a sublime switch of play.
Shane Biggs also showed some flair around the ground, with his fast feet finding space around the contest, and his goal from just inside 50 in the opening quarter was classy.
The Swans reserves have now won three of their opening six games of the NEAFL season, and travel to Brisbane next weekend to face a Lions reserves side who have only lost once this season.
