Summary
The Sydney Swans return to Friday night football for the first time during the home and away season since 2003 when they take on Carlton tomorrow night.
After the round four loss to Geelong, the Swans undertook a rigorous training program over the Easter break in the hope of erasing the skill errors that were prevalent during periods of the game against the Cats. The Swans have an impressive recent history against Carlton having won 14 out of the past 15 encounters, and have not lost to the Blues in Sydney since 1993.
The Blues have started off the season in very good form having only lost to Collingwood in round three and drawn with Essendon a week later. After trailing Adelaide deep in the final quarter last weekend, Carlton were able to mount a comeback and sneak over the line to carry winning form in to tomorrow’s game.
Players to watch
Sydney Swans: Tadhg Kennelly
The Sydney Swans defender will return from a knee injury sustained during the off-season against the Blues tomorrow night and will add experience and run-and-carry to the side. Kennelly has played the last three games in the Swans reserves and is raring to go, with his fresh legs hopefully adding some run out of defence that was missing towards the end of the Geelong game.
Carlton: Marc Murphy
Apart from a relatively quiet game against Collingwood in round 3, Marc Murphy has racked up some big possession tallies so far in 2011. He is averaging 30 disposals per game so far this season, and despite only kicking three goals, has been crucial in the Blues’ attacking half of the ground.
Match-up to watch
Josh Kennedy v Chris Judd
There is no doubt that Carlton captain Chris Judd is one of the league’s premier players. The reigning Brownlow Medalist has started off 2011 in devastating form and Swans fans need only look at the third quarter from last year’s Elimination final to see the damage he can do. It was Josh Kennedy who went to Judd and halted his impact on the game in the fourth quarter of the final, and after gathering 29 possessions and 10 tackles in the Geelong game, Kennedy is at peak form to take on Judd again.

Coaching match-up
John Longmire v Brett Ratten
John Longmire tasted defeat for the first time as a senior coach when Geelong proved too strong for the Swans at the SCG a fortnight ago. Since then, he has focused heavily on improving the side’s skills in training and has brought two experienced players in Jarred Moore and Tadhg Kennelly back into the team. Brett Ratten has his Carlton side sitting in the top four having played - and won - one more game than the Swans. Ratten will take the same team that beat Adelaide last weekend into tonight’s game.

Memorable match
Elimination Final, 2010: Sydney 14.15 (99) d Carlton 13.16 (94), ANZ Stadium
The last meeting between the two sides was an instant classic. The Swans jumped out of the blocks and looked good early, leading by a game-high 27 points in the second quarter. Carlton came storming back in the third term, kicking all five goals for the quarter to take a seven-point lead into the final break. The Swans surged again at the start of the final quarter, taking a 12-point lead after successive goals from Trent Dennis-Lane, Ryan O’Keefe, and Dennis-Lane again following a superb chase on Carlton’s Dennis Armfield. The Blues had their chances in a tense final ten minutes, but the Swans hang on for what would be Paul Roos’ last victory as coach.
What John Longmire says …
“We need to get the decision (on who to play on Chris Judd) right but we can’t forget (Marc) Murphy - he’s in ripping form at the moment - and Kade Simpson is a goal kicker, (Andrew) Carrazzo got under our guard in the final last year, so Carlton have got a number of players who are dangerous.’’
