Hot Swans soak it up
Sydney is buzzing and the Swans are enjoying the moment, while keeping their eyes on the prize
SYDNEY Swans training sessions and media opportunities are typically low-key affairs in the Harbour City, but there was a veritable carnival atmosphere at the SCG on Tuesday.
It is normal for a handful of scribes to attend the weekly press gatherings, along with the odd TV camera, but on Tuesday the numbers had swelled to unprecedented levels ahead of this week's Grand Final against Hawthorn.
With Adam Goodes, Josh Kennedy and Lewis Jetta among nine Swans up for interview, it was a mad scramble for everyone to secure their piece of suddenly one of the hottest teams in town.
And this was all before the gates were thrown open for the public training session later in the day.
It is a totally different experience for many of the players, who have a far different profile out of the AFL fishbowls in Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.
Only seven Swans have experienced Grand Final week before, back in 2006 against West Coast, and they will be doing their best to guide some of the youngsters on the list through it all.
"We've got the Grand Final parade to look forward to, all these media commitments, but it's just about keeping a level head," Lewis Roberts-Thomson told AFL.com.au.
"We've got a couple of training sessions, we've got team meetings and massages, it's just about keeping a normal routine.
"The good thing is we're currently in Sydney, there's a bit of excitement, but when we hit Melbourne it's going to be pretty full-on."
Goodes has kept a slightly lower profile than normal during the finals, leaving much of the public speaking to some of his teammates.
But even Goodes was soaking it all up on Tuesday.
"The way our leadership group works and the co-captaincy, we just share the load," he said.
"That's also the way we play our football.
"I haven't pulled back at all, maybe you guys (the media) haven't requested me enough, maybe you don't want to talk to me.
"I’m happy to talk to you guys, it's an awesome week, and I’m just really excited to be part of it again."
Enjoying the hoopla that surrounds Grand Final week is one element the Swans are keen to enjoy, but they also know it is all about Saturday's game in front of what will be an enormous crowd at the MCG.
"It's something that I've always dreamed of as a kid and I've just got to try and soak it all up, but also be as focused as I can be on Saturday and what we're here to do," All Australian midfielder Josh Kennedy said.
"It's one more game, two more hours and hopefully a win to finish off a great season.
"It's a great time of year, I'm so happy to be part of it and hopefully we can bring the Cup home to Sydney.
"Our list is really fit, we're playing some of our best football at the moment too, hopefully we can put it all together on Saturday and knock over the Hawks."
