We continue our countdown to the biggest event in the Club’s history - the 25 year Anniversary Dinner. We have rolled back the clock and are working through the years from our Sydney incarnation in 1982 each day leading up to the big event. Here is 1984…

1984 began with high hopes. An influx of talent into the Club saw Craig Holden, David Murphy, Bill Picken and Barry Mitchell don the red and white for the first time.

Despite a first round defeat at the hands of reigning premiers Hawthorn, an ensuing winning streak saw the Swans fourth on the ladder with six wins after nine rounds.

However, mid-season turmoil took its toll on the Club as Captain Barry Round announced his intention to retire from the game - although he did rethink that decision and make a comeback several weeks later and Rick Quade resigned as coach.

Another blow was to come at season’s end when David Rhys-Jones, Bernie Evans and Greg Smith all transferred to Melbourne-based clubs.

There was, however, a glimpse of what the future would hold, as second year full forward Warwick Capper topped the Club goalkicking, and was beginning to show the football world the talent and showmanship which would captivate the Harbour City over the next couple of seasons.
