When Harry Cunningham’s name wasn’t read out on AFL draft day last year, he started to think his dream of playing AFL might never come true.

But the 18-year-old, who was elevated from the Swans rookie list today, is proof that hard work and persistence does pay off.

The Turvey Park junior, who was picked up by the Swans with pick 93 in December’s rookie draft, has been named in the team for this Saturday night’s round one clash against GWS.

Cunningham told sydneyswans.com.au of the excitement of being selected to make his AFL debut this week, just months after he thought he might never make it.

“I was so excited when I found out,” Cunningham said.

“I just love footy and all I’ve wanted to do since I was young was play AFL footy, and I guess that’s what’s going to happen this weekend.

“I’m definitely excited to be part of it this weekend because this is going to be historic - especially playing against GWS in their first game.

“I’m just happy to get a game, that’s the main thing. I’m just stoked.”

Cunningham said he has taken every opportunity to put his name forward since he arrived at the club late last year.

“After the (national) draft I didn’t think anything was going to happen because I didn’t get picked, but I was lucky enough that Kinnear (Beatson, Swans Manager - Player Personnel) offered me two weeks to come here and train, and since then I haven’t looked back,” he said.

“I just tried to work hard at what I needed to improve on fitness wise and I’ve fitted in with the group pretty well, all the blokes are awesome and they get around you and make you feel welcome.”

“It’s been so easy to come into an environment like this and have an impact.”

The speedy midfielder took his chances throughout the NAB Cup campaign, playing every match and scoring six goals.

“I didn’t think I’d even get a NAB Cup game to be honest, but once I got one I just got a taste for it,” Cunningham said.

“With the NAB Cup I just took the opportunity and hit the ground running.”

The 18-year old hopes that his parents will get the chance to share in his dream this weekend, if he can finally get onto them.

“I’ll try and get onto my parents but they’re up in Fiji at the moment on a holiday,” he said.

“They get back in on Saturday, but I’m pretty close to my family so I’ll let my sisters know so they will probably be the first (to hear the news).

“My parents get back Saturday morning, so they will get back just in time…I hope.”
