THE Sydney Swans reserves have continued their strong pre-season form, posting a resounding win over Belconnen in a practice match yesterday.
The Swans scored 19.13 127 to down Belconnen 5.5 35 in a hitout at Lakeside Oval in Sydney.
Reserves coach Henry Playfair said the team improved from their game a week earlier, when they beat the East Coast Eagles.
“They were very even across the board. There was a lot of good teamwork and unselfish play, which was a big focus during the week,’’ Playfair said.
There was a howling breeze blowing and the Swans didn’t adjust well in the first quarter, allowing Belconnen to take the lead at the first break.
But in the second quarter the Swans piled on the goals and were never headed.
Last year’s top draft pick for the Swans, Jed Lamb, was a standout playing as a forward, and Mike Pyke also put in a strong performance. He rucked and rested in attack, kicking two goals.
Other players to perform well included Luke Parker, who was strong at the stoppages. “His contested ball, tackling and pressure were very good,’’ Playfair said.
Lewis Roberts-Thomson, on the comeback from injury, played three quarters and his fitness will be assessed during the week.
Craig Bird, who was named as an emergency for the seniors, played a full game on the ball and scored two goals.
Youngsters Lewis Johnston and Alex Johnson were the mainstays in defence.
The Swans Reserves will have one more practice match before their season begins in two weeks. Next Sunday they take on GWS Giants, with Playfair going head to head with Kevin Sheedy in the coach’s box.
That game will be the curtain raiser to the Swans first home game of the year, against Essendon at ANZ Stadium, next Sunday at 2.10pm.
